Aloha, Mr. President!

A few days ago, I wrote about the unbelievable inefficiency happening with our elected representatives in Washington.

I spoke about the need for new faces to unclog the drain, so to speak. My plan is called “468 in 2014”. It should be our shared goal to see 435 new members of Congress and 33 new Senators. That’s right— I’m advocating throwing out all of the incumbents. This may be the only way to get Washington working again! Is it likely? No. Is it necessary? After what I’ve witnessed in the past 24-36 hours, hell yes!

Folks, this Fiscal Cliff “deal” is ridiculous.

You do know that it actually adds $4 Trillion to the deficit over the next decade?

How about the fact that our esteemed Senators voted to pass this bill a mere 3 minutes after receiving it? Keep in mind that the bill is 154 pages long! We must have some damn speed readers up there in the big dome on the hill!

Or, did you know that there is a nice group of goodies in there for a variety of favorite “causes” including Hollywood:

  • $430 million for Hollywood through “special expensing rules” to encourage TV and film production in the United States.  Producers can expense up to $15 million of costs for their projects.
  • $331 million for railroads by allowing short-line and regional operators to claim a tax credit up to 50 percent of the cost to maintain tracks that they own or lease.
  • $222 million for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands through returned excise taxes collected by the federal government on rum produced in the islands and imported to the mainland.
  • $70 million for NASCAR by extending a “7-year cost recovery period for certain motorsports racing track facilities.”
  • $59 million for algae growers through tax credits to encourage production of “cellulosic biofuel” at up to $1.01 per gallon.
  • $4 million for electric motorcycle makers by expanding an existing green-energy tax credit for buyers of plug-in vehicles to include electric motorbikes.

This was all courtesy of ABC NEWS by the way, go check out their article. Now, I’m all for drinking rum! But a tax break for rum producers? And now we’re paying for NASCAR?

And then we’ve got Obama saying that we simply can’t cut our way out of this mess.

IN OTHER WORDS, he says we have to raise revenue and not rely solely on spending cuts to get out of this giant deficit debacle that will be the downfall of our country. The problem is… THERE WEREN”T ANY MAJOR SPENDING CUTS INCLUDED IN THIS BILL. They have simply delayed fixing the problem, yet again!

And maybe there were some, like Illinois Democrat Rep. Danny K. Davis, who voted not for spending cuts or raising taxes on the wealthy, but on the gifts that he can continue to give his constituents: the unemployment checks the government will still be able to send. “When I go to church on Sunday, I know that I will see people with the assurance that pretty soon an unemployment check is in the mail,” Davis said. Hallelujah!

And if you think that none of this affects you– that it’s only those rich folk living high in their mansions– think again. Your payroll tax is going up!

But I’m a numbers kind of guy… and I think there is one number here that tells the whole story: $1 in spending cuts for every $41 in tax increases. And Obama says we can’t simply cut our way out of this… no— not with those kinds of numbers.

And the way this all happened— the disrespect shown between members– and the blatant disregard for their constituents (you and I) is simply disheartening. Did you hear about this? Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid accused House Speaker John Boehner of running a “dictatorship.” Not wise words becoming of a senior statesman, that’s for sure. But instead of taking the high road, Boehner, upon seeing Harry Reid in the White House lobby, said, “go fuck yourself.” Wow. In the White House lobby? Now, I know Vice President Cheney set the precedent a few years back when he uttered these words on the floor of the United States Congress. But what are our leaders thinking? Will name calling get the job done for you and I? Could you walk up and tell a co-worker to “go fuck yourself” without hearing about it from your boss? Why are they held to a different standard?

I’m telling you, folks: 468 in 2014! That’s the solution— flush the toilet!

Now, President Obama isn’t going to escape my ire today, either.

Let’s take a look at these screen shots from just before Noon today at and — both on opposite ends of the political spectrum:

Go ahead… look very closely. Do you see anything on there about President Obama jetting off back to Hawaii as soon as the House passed the bill last night?

I said look closely! It’s there— listed under a “Local News” widget at But look at the tiny print— and it’s not even listed on the main page of either NBC or FOX.

Now, you’re asking, “what’s the big deal, Nick?” Well, I think this is quite rich for a laugh, is all. Here Obama keeps harping on asking the richest among us to pay just a little bit more…. and he is also comfortable raising payroll taxes even on the poorest among us. Yet, he is willing to spend over $3 Million of OUR money, taxpayers money, on returning to Hawaii to resume his vacation. Where does this number come from? $3 Million? Air Force One costs roughly $180,000 an hour to fly. Washington to Honolulu is 18 hours, round trip. 18 x $180,000 = $3,240,000.

Couple this with the round trip that HE HAS ALREADY TAKEN there earlier in December… and you are looking at a taxpayer bill of over $7 Million.

My critics will point out that George W. Bush took more vacation in his term. I’m not a Bush defender. I wasn’t a fan then. And I have more of a “grudging respect” now. But I’m nowhere near a defender. However, Bush flew to his ranch in Texas– about 2.5 hours from Washington. And this was a ranch owned by him… not a multi-million-dollar oceanfront estate that must be rented and disturbs the daily life of everyone in a 5-mile radius during the special Christmas Holiday.

Here is what should have happened: the entire First Family should have returned just after Christmas when the President did. After the Fiscal Cliff was settled, they could have went to Florida— 4 hours, roundtrip from Washington— or they could have went to Camp David, a lovely retreat meant for Presidential vacations.

Presidents deserve vacations. I will not begrudge them that. However, I believe that this extravagance by President Obama is simply an act of thumbing his nose at you and I. Can you afford a back-and-forth vacation to Hawaii? Do you struggle with even keeping up with a mortgage and all your bills, like most Americans, myself included?

Next time you sacrifice that cup of coffee at McDonald’s because you really don’t have that extra dollar, think about our President spending $7 Million of our money on his Christmas getaway.

When you see that payroll tax go up on your next check, rest easy at night knowing that you paid for a $7 Million airfare.

Maybe if this would have happened at any other time, it wouldn’t have bothered me as much. But when Washington is at a standstill and this “deal” accomplished nothing but spending increases and tax increases, this flagrant, glaring, gross usage of a perk of the office is disrespectful to the 98% of Americans that Obama claims to be standing strong for.

And that’s it. My opinion. If you disagree, let me know. And if I pissed ya’ off, here are the words of Winston Churchill, “You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

468 in 2014!
